Our Purpose

We established ourselves in 2017 to be a waypoint for ex-offenders seeking to get back on their feet and become a part of society, of a community. We host events and activities in the community for people to participate in, and have a litany of other resources that would help ex-offenders re-enter society.

We hope to eventually open up a social services building for ex-offenders to come and be able to access resources.

Who is Kathryn Betts?

Kathryn Betts was the mother of our founder and CEO, Majorie Underwood, and Dr. Willie Underwood III the namesake of this foundation.

She always believed in helping those that were in need and made sure to give back to the community whenever possible. She worked hard for a railroad company for close to 40 years to provide for her daughter and son.

Those values, continue to guide the way for future generations and to serve as a firm pillar of the Kathryn Betts Foundation.

As a family, the core principles that were instilled were education, hard work, and to never forgetting your moral compass.

Who We Are

Denishea Calhoun

Director of Operations

43, a Cincinnnati native, and a mother of two sons, our Acting Director of Operations has been sticking with us since 2021. She started volunteering with us wanting to keep herself busy after having to retire early from nursing due to health reasons. Having spent her whole life in nursing, she has a strong desire to help others and working with the organization really helped her continue that and keep going after retirement.

Believing in the organization's goals, she took on a role in assisting with its management. That role has since grown into her current position, which allows her to oversee the organization's daily operations. Her responsibilities now include recruiting volunteers, identifying opportunities for them, managing the event schedule, and handling all correspondence with volunteers. Her nurturing nature has helped her run KBF like a family, with herself serving as an elder for volunteers to look up to and reach out to for support in a judgment-free space.

Majorie Underwood

CEO and Founder of the Kathryn Betts Foundation

My name is Majorie Underwood CEO of Kathryn Betts Foundation,

I am a ex-offender served 4 years in Federal Prison. While locked up I realize that there wasn't  any support or resources that are available to help someone that is being released.

This foundation is here for that purpose to provide the resources and support that is needed to function and stay out of the system. During my duration of my time I wanted to come home and become a productive citizen and be able to give back to our community and help others in their journey to do the same. The goal for the foundation is to open up in 2025 a Social Services building for the communities and also where ex-offenders can come and be able to get all the resources that is available.
